Advanced Three-Day Intensive Family History/Genealogy Training Course

Course Description

The Advanced Three-Day Intensive course is offered at the Los Angeles Family History Library that provides advanced training for Family History/Genealogy Research. The classes will run Wednesday thru Friday on the dates given below. This training is designed especially for those who already know the basics of family history/genealogical research and wish to get more advanced training. This course is especially for Family History Consultants, volunteers who work at family history centers, members of the church and nonmembers who wish to improve their family history/genealogical research skills.

Prerequisites: Foundation Course or equivalent, in particular:

1. Know how to use the basic data entering features of the record management computer program: Personal Ancestral File (PAF) or another equivalent program.

2. Be acquainted with the New Family History Library Catalog on https://familysearch.org/#form=catalog

3. Be acquainted with www.ancestry.com

If a person does not have the prerequisites, he/she is encouraged to take the "Foundation Course" or the "Three-Day Intensive Course."

Course Schedule

The classes will be from 8 AM to 5 PM each of the three days. Each class will usually last two hours. Each will involve classroom instruction followed by an assignment to be completed on the computers.

Advanced Three-Day Intensive Course

Oct 18 8 AM U.S. Census Records
  10 AM Death Records: Cemetery, Obituary, Death Cert., etc.
  1 PM Wills and Probates
  3 PM Google is more than a Search Engine
Oct 19 8 AM Passenger lists / Naturalization Records
  10 AM Land, Property and Deeds
  1 PM Advanced PAF 1 - includes notes, sources and attaching images
  3 PM Advanced PAF 2 - sharing, GEDCOM files and merging
Oct 20 8 AM Church Records: Non LDS
  10 AM The Family History Library and Beyond the Family History Library - There's a Goldmine Waiting for you: Courthouses, Libraries, and Archives ...
  1 PM Brick Wall? Ways Over, Around, or Through: The principles taught in this class will apply to U.S. and foreign research.
  3 PM Military Records


Course Registration

If you wish to attend one of the Advanced Three-Day courses of twelve classes, please completely fill out and submit your information in the spaces below OR register at the Welcome Desk at the LAFHL.

You will receive an email within 2 weekdays confirming your registration. If you don't receive the email, email the LAFHL at lafamhist@lafhl.org  Your pre-registration will be finalized by paying the $20 fee by check after receiving the confirming email. This fee is used to cover handout costs. If a person cannot afford the $20 registration fee, it will be waved. The class order is subject to change.
