NEW Soundex/Index to Ellis Island Passenger Records for 1944 - 1948
Microfilms # 2,241,252 - # 2,241,294
The first 42 microfilms of the (92 microfilm) series of NYC passenger arrivals from 1944 - 1948 have been purchased for the FHC with donations from a variety of sources. They are now at the Family History Center. In spite of how they are labeled, these microfilms contain arrival cards for many passengers arriving earlier or later than the 1944 - 1948 period--as early as 1889 !!! So check them out for your own soundexed names.
Please note that the microfilms are hard to read. They are fuzzy and badly copied, however they are there and who knows what you will find. If you have been unable to find the names of ancestors who arrived in NYC in the 1906 - 1943 soundex/index series, check out these later microfilms--you might find them there.
In addition, once you get to the proper soundex code, be sure to check the entire code for the names you are researching. We have not yet figured out how the cards are organized within each soundex code; some are organized alphabetically, some chronologically, and some have been filmed randomly, so you will have to look through the entire soundex code for the family you are researching to be sure that you don't miss any family members.
There are also index cards for war brides arriving into the US through Ellis Island during those years, so this series should be a great resource for those looking for women in that category.
These microfilms will be located either under NARA series # M1417, or immediately below the 1906 - 1943 series (in the same cabinet) on the north wall (rear left) of the Microfilm Room.
