Heritage Quest Research

The LARFHC now has Heritage Quest free online on all the computers.

You must use one of the computers at the LARFHC and the ICON
"FHC Online Portal Services" that has 2 persons and a key on one of the monitors.
The ICON will take you to a PAGE with the H.Q. link.
H.Q. has all 1790 - 1930 census images online BUT only 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1910 and 1920 are indexed. Suggest you use the 1880, 1900 and 1920 indexes at Ancestry.com and the census index books for the other censuses to find the information needed to use the "Browse" in H.Q.. See the H.Q.'s online information page at http://persi.heritagequestonline.com/hqoweb/library/do/census/whatsnew

Suggest you also go to a library that has the Ancestry Library Edition. See this link that has the information about the Ancestry library Edition http://www.larfhc.org/ancestrycomres.htm

You can use Heritage Quest at home if you have LA CITY Public Library card at http://wfsearch.webfeat.org/la.html Enter your card number, Submit, click on "H" database and find Heritage Quest and finally click on Heritage Quest link.

You can also use Heritage Quest at home if you have LA COUNTY Public Library card at http://colapublib.org/periodicals/ Look under "Reference" to find and click on "Heritage Quest". Enter your 13 digit (no spaces) card number and proceed.

HeritageQuest Online provides ... 25,000 family and local histories, HeritageQuest Online includes the complete U.S. Federal Census from 1790-1930, the Periodical Source Index (PERSI), and the Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Application Files.

U.S.Federal Census: Search Guide

·        Complete U.S. Federal Census, 1790-1930. The page images and corresponding indexes for the entire census are included in HeritageQuest Online. In addition to the ability to search by name, our census records can be searched by place of birth, age, ethnicity, sex and other variables making this the most versatile census searching available online. Census images are displayed as large .gif files directly in your browser, with no need for a plug-in.

·        The U.S. Federal Census from 1790 to 1930 can be searched by:

Surname
Given Name
County Locality
Census Year
Age – 1850 forward
Birthplace – 1850 Forward
Race – 1850 Forward (HeritageQuest exclusive)
Sex – 1850 forward (HeritageQuest exclusive)
There are no Boolean or adjacency operators and no truncation or wildcard characters in the census search
Some names in the census data may have been misspelled during the census or transcribed incorrectly during indexing. If your searches are not returning the results you would like, try entering alternate spellings of names.

Census Indexing of Names

Our indexing captures the "head of household" for each census year. The enumerator would list as “head of household” the person who was responsible for the care of the home and/or family. This person could be the husband, mother with children, person living alone, etc. In more recent census years, the census forms were more extensive and included a listing of everyone residing within the household. A summary of what we capture in our indexing for each census year is listed below.

1790-1840

Every name listed in the census was indexed, because only heads of household were listed.

1850-1860

·        Heads-of-households, and persons residing within the household who had a different surname

·        all individuals living in institutions.

1870

·        Heads-of-households, and persons residing within the household who had a different surname

·        persons residing within the same household with a different race

·        males residing within the same household over 50 years of age

·        females residing within the same household over 70 years of age

·        all individuals living in institutions

1880

·        Heads-of-households, and persons residing within the household who had a different surname

·        all individuals living in institutions

1890

·        Most records destroyed in fire. Substitute records were used.

1900-1920

·        Heads-of-households, and persons residing within the household who had a different surname

·        all boarders residing within the household

·        all individuals living in institutions

1930

·        Heads-of-households, and persons residing within the household who had a different surname

·        all boarders residing within the household

·        all individuals living in institutions

Genealogy & Local History: Search Guide

Libraries can instantly offer their readers over 25,000 digitized books containing family and local histories, every work searchable. Every page of each book is presented and can be easily downloaded or copied. Users can search books for people, places or publications. You can jump directly to the citation, table of contents, the first page in a book or a section that has your keyword hit on it. Users can take notes on books or magazines they find and save them along with citations in their “notebook”, where they can visit to print, email or download their records. Titles are added weekly.

The entire book database is searchable by these elements, alone or in combination:
·        Personal name (first and/or last)
·        Place (state, county, town, other location)
·        Keywords (Company names, topics, dates, etc.)
The genealogical monographs, local histories, and other materials are accessible by a full range of ASCII text fields from the MARC records:
·        Author
·        Title
·        Date
·        Personal names
·        Subject
·        City of Publication
·        Keywords (proper nouns, topics, etc.)
Tips for Better Book Searching

When searching for books in HeritageQuest Online, you can use Boolean and adjacency operators to search for more than one word at a time.

The following are the operators you can use while searching HeritageQuest Online. Note that these words are not case sensitive.

EXACT

Placing EXACT before a search term will match that term exactly. For example, EXACT BOOK will find matches on BOOK only and not BOOKS, BOOKKEEPING, etc. To match an EXACT phrase, the phrase should be enclosed in double quotes. All search terms not modified by EXACT or quotation marks will be searched with stemming. (BOOK will match book, books, booked, booker, booking, etc.)

NEAR

Used with two terms, NEAR will find all matches of the two terms within 10 words of each other by default. To specify how many words can separate the two terms, include a number preceded by a colon after the NEAR. For example, SHIELDS NEAR:4 JACKSON will find all occurrences of the name Shields that are within four words of the name Jackson.

FBY

When you enter two terms, you can specify that your results have the two words in the entered order within 10 words of each other. You can specify how many words can separate the two terms by including a number preceded by a colon after the FBY as in HISTORY FBY:2 INDIANA.

AND

Using AND retrieves results that include all the terms you have entered in the search field. For example, WOMEN AND HISTORY retrieves all results containing both words women and history somewhere in the book. WOMEN AND HISTORY AND POLITICS retrieves all results with all three concepts. An AND search is the broadest search you can do.

AND NOT

Using AND NOT indicates that you want to retrieve results that include your first entered term but not the second. For example, TAFT AND NOT OHIO will retrieve results that include the word Taft but not the word Ohio anywhere in the book.

OR

Or will retrieve results that include either your first entered search term or your second. For example, a search on INDIANA OR OHIO will find results with either state in them.

Truncation

Use * at the end of a word to find multiple characters following the root word. Use ? to find only one character following the root. Truncation only works in book and PERSI searching. There are no truncation or wildcard characters in Census Searching.

NOTE: All of these operators are stop words; this means that you are not able to search for them unless you enclose them in quotation marks. For example, searching on WOMEN AND HISTORY will bring back results with women and history in them, while searching on women "and" history will bring back results with the words “women”, “and”, and “history” in them.

NOTE: All search fields are connected by the Boolean search term AND. If you enter ANNAPOLIS in the Place Name(s) field and enter SMITH in the Additional Keywords field, HeritageQuest Online will search for ANNAPOLIS AND SMITH within the entire book. To create a narrower search, please use NEAR or FBY.

Results

Users see a list of materials that meet their search criteria, ranked by relevance. As they make their selections, secondary result screens provide additional details to help pinpoint items of interest.

In books they include the author, title, imprint, number of pages, optional table of contents.

Customization

1)     Display by type of material.
2)     Set number of citations per page.
3)     Sort by element of choice.
4)     Modify the search
      or Move from the citation of choice to full page image.

Materials are delivered in full page image, ready for printing or PDF downloading. All page images are zoomable onscreen.

HeritageQuest Online saves every search used during a session. With one click, users can retrieve their previous search strategies for reuse or modification.

PERSI (PERiodical Source Index): Search Guide

The Periodical Source Index (PERSI) is a comprehensive subject index covering genealogy and local history periodicals written in English and French (Canada) since 1800. It is by far the largest and most respected such index in its field. This resource combines census data, family records, local histories and other primary sources. The database contains more than 1.6 million citations from over 6000 titles – articles ranging from the 1800’s to the present.

PERSI citations are broken down into the following categories:

·        Surname citations – Used for articles describing families of particular ancestors.

·        Locality/Place citations – Used for articles describing research, records, or history of a particular town, county, state, etc.

·        “How-to” citations – Used for articles describing particular tips, techniques, and methodology for genealogical and historical research.

·        Periodicals – Browse or search publications by title or keyword .

Accompanying the article citations is an extensive bibliography which directs researchers to access needed articles from the publisher, from a nearby research library, through Inter-Library Loan, or from the Allen County Public Library.

Local History Periodicals are indexed by subject, locality, and surname. These include the full runs of key state history journals for each state in the U.S. Some titles you may recognize are the Illinois Historical Journal, Chronicles of Oklahoma, and the Maryland Historical Magazine.

Major Genealogical Journals, the most respected journals in the genealogy field, are included in the PERSI Collection. Some titles included are the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, New England Historic and Genealogical Register, and The American Genealogist.

Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Application Files: Search Guide

Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Application Files: This HeritageQuest collection details records of 80,000+ individuals who served in the Revolutionary War and contains both genealogical and historical information. Each veteran’s file usually contains six or more pages on each veteran and normally includes the veteran’s former rank, unit, and period of service, age or date of birth, residence, and sometimes – genealogical information on other family members.

The Revolutionary War Collection can be searched by:
Surname  Given Name  State  Service
When a name is searched, the results, as well as, the total number of results is displayed. The names are sorted by Surname with the option to sort by Given Name. There is the option to view a name or “Mark” the names you wish to save to the “Notebook”. The “Marked” names held in the “Notebook” can then be emailed, printed, or downloaded.

There is also the option to “Take Notes” which are saved along with the “Marked” names and included in the email, print copy, or download.

Clicking on the linked name takes you directly to the positive Image and the ability to view it in the negative. The Image opens at 200%, easily readable, with the ability to view at 100% or 400%.

Navigating from one Image to another is done by clicking on an arrow to go to the next Image or to a previous one.
