Family History/Genealogy Courses
for Priesthood Leaders
The mission of the Los Angeles Regional Family History Center or LARFHC, is to provide:
1. A facility where effective family history research can be conducted;
2. Quality training in genealogical research and computer technology for priesthood leaders, those with family history callings, and others who have a desire to learn or improve their skills in meeting their personal genealogy goals; and
3. A resource for Stake Presidents and Bishops to help promote family history research among ward members and have a more effective "Gift of Family History" missionary program.

D&C 2:2The LARFHC will work with you to schedule the classes at a time that is best for you (such as some evening during the week, Saturday afternoon, or Sunday evening). If you desire for your stake leadership to take this training please call Richard McBride at 310-474-9990 or submit a request below. The classes are each two hours.
Class 1. Family History Priesthood Leader Duties and Beginning PAF 5.2
Attendees should come with at least two/three generations of their family data.
First Hour:
Basic Priesthood Leader Family History Training
The basics of managing priesthood Temple and family history work in stakes and wards will be presented. When teaching stake leaders we will just cover the duties of the Stake Presidency, High Council, and Stake Family History Consultant. When ward leaders are present well will cover the duties of the Bishopric, Elders Quorum President, High Priests Group Leader, and the Ward Family History Consultant.
Learn how to use PAF 5.2:
Learn how to enter your own family history into the PAF 5.2 program and view, edit, organize and backup that information.
Second Hour:
Building PAF files:
This will be a hands-on laboratory period with individual one-on-one training for each attendee using the computers at the LARFHC. Attendees need to bring their personal family history information to create their own PAF file. This PAF file will also be used in the second lesson. The LARFHC has diskettes which can be purchased for 40 cents plus tax if the attendee does not bring his/her own.
The LARFHC will work with your Stake Family History Consultant to help provide trainers for each class attendee when the classes are scheduled.
Ten copies of PAF 5.2 on CDs will be given to each stake to help members put PAF 5.2 on their personal computers. Members may download at home the PAF 5.2 at no cost from www.familysearch.org and "Order/Download Products" and "Software Downloads - Free".
Class 2. Learning the Temple submission process and how to use the Salt Lake Family History Library catalog on www.familysearch.org
First Hour:
Learn the Temple submission process and how to use the Salt Lake Library catalog:
1. Learn how to create GED files and the important role they play.
2. Learn about the Temple submission process. This includes the need to check the IGI on www.familysearch.org to make sure that the work is not already done.
PAF Insight will also be discussed.3. Understand how to use the Salt Lake Family History Library catalog on www.familysearch.org Learn about micro film/fiche library.
Second Hour:
Searching the Salt Lake Library catalog and creating GED files:
This will be a hands-on laboratory period using the computers at the LARFHC. The attendees will be asked to create GED files and do some searches using the Family History Library catalog on www.familysearch.org
